As a consumer who bought weed in an illegal state for years, strain names and genetics stopped mattering after a certain point, but as a grower (or potential grower) in a legal state, it’s an entirely different game.

Strong genetics will make the difference between being rewarded for months of work, or punished for not doing your research, which costs you time and money.

Now, when I plan out a grows, I’m considering a variety of factors, including my environment, end game, potential yields, and social proof.

5 Tips for Selecting the Right Strains for Your Indoor Hobby Grow

  1. Know Your Grow: Do you have low ceilings? Probably best not to choose a plant known for its height. Do you live in a humid climate? Consider plants that are less dense and have longer internode spacing (dense buds build up moisture inside that can lead to bud rot).
  2. Lead With The End in Mind: What do you want out of the grow? Flower? Solventless Hash? Edibles? This will impact what you are growing for, and selecting plants bred for those goals will help.
  3. Look At Yields: As a Hobby Grower, yields matter; you have limits on space and plants, so you need to get the most out of your efforts, and growing below-average performers (even if they’re amazing) may not be worth the space trade-off with a higher-yielding variety. But there’s always a balance to be found.
