Space Buckets: The R2D2-Lookalike Cannabis Grow for Super Small Spaces
What would it be like to pop open R2D2 and find a small cannabis plant inside of it?
In the past few months, I’ve had multiple growers and beginners reach out to me and ask me for my take on Space Buckets — small 5-gallon bucket cannabis grows.
And until they had reached out, it wasn’t a technique I was at all familiar with.
I’ve grown in tents since I started, and all the hobby grows I’ve been in are a collection of tents or small build-outs. Space Buckets were new to me.
A quick google will show you why I refer to these as R2D2 grows, because, when a Space Bucket is set up, it often resembles the infamous Star Wars character in outside appearance.
But Space Buckets are nothing new, they’ve been around since at least 2012.
High Times called it “The latest trend in cultivation” in 2017. There’s a subreddit dedicated to Space Buckets, moderated by, among others, a user named ekrof, who popularized the buildouts and catalyzed the movement surrounding them. There’s even an entire website dedicated to “open sourcing” all of the information needed to build and use a Space Bucket.
