The 5 Limiting Factors of Any Grow

In every grow, the same set of variables (limiting factors) are at play. Understanding each of these factors, as well as their relationship with one another, is key to getting the most out of your space.

All grows are limited by 5 factors:

Light: Intensity, Quality (spectrum), and Duration (Daily Light Interval/DLI).

Is your space getting enough light? Are your lights producing a high quality spectrum? Are your plants getting enough light each day and for how long?

Water: Over/Underwatering, Drybacks, pH.

Are you plants getting enough water? Are your letting your media dry out periodically? Are you measuring pH of inputs and runoff?

Nutrients: Schedules, pH, EC

Are your plants happy or hungry? Are you following the feeding schedule your nutrients came with? Are you measuring and adjusting your feeds (pH, EC)?

Temperature: Hot/Cold, Daily Swings

How warm is your environment? Do you have large daily swings or maintain a consistent range? Do you adjust temperatures for different stages of your cycle?

Humidity: Wet/dry, Daily Swings

How much moisture is in the air in your space? Are your plants transpiring heavily? Do you have processes in place to avoid large humidity swings?

Each of these factors relates to the others; the more cohesive the relationship, the more you’ll get out of your space.

Pay attention to the ebb and flow of your space. Adjust as needed.
