The Secret Tool For Staying Sane When Joining Twitter Communities

Whether it’s #NFTTwitter or a community-based cohort like #Ship30for30, the sheer volume of twitter participation can feel overwhelming, even for Twitter veterans.

It’s natural to feel pressured to follow or connect with everyone in the beginning.

This is especially true in groups that encourage “Follow Backs” and “Give as much as you get”. But it is impossible (and overwhelming) to get to know everyone all at once.

When you first join a community, rather following everyone, use Twitter Lists to hold tryouts and gradually refine.

For example:

  • Ship30 creates an automatic list of 650+ People who signed up for the cohort and encourages we follow the list to keep up with everyone.
  • From there, you can make a smaller list of Shippers actively participating in the cohort
  • I also encourage you to make lists for every community “breakout” session (for Shippers, Breakout Rooms, but for others, this could be spaces or Clubhouses). Return to these periodically to give feedback to the people who helped you over the course of your journey.
  • Finally, follow accounts that “make the cut”, or refine further with another list.

Don’t feel obligated to follow everyone (and don’t take it personal if not everyone follows you back).
