What are the “profits” of a Hobby Grow?
This came up on a podcast I recently listened to, and the answer might surprise you.
—
For commercial growers, profits come from selling crops.
For hobby growers, profits aren’t measured in dollars.
They’re measured in grams and pounds.
Or, as stated in the podcast:
Hobby profits are the ability to experiment.
Let me explain…
(or you can skip to the tl;dr at the end)

Let’s say, for ease:
- You grow 100 lbs.
- Each pound costs you $1 to grow.
- You can sell each pound for $2.
- You need to sell 50 pounds to cover costs.
- You have 50 pounds leftover of “profit.”
For a commercial grow, all 100 pounds get sold.
Profit = $$$

For a hobbyist, it looks more like this:
- You get 3 lbs from your harvest.
- You need 2 lbs to cover medicinal/personal needs.
