What are the “profits” of a Hobby Grow?

This came up on a podcast I recently listened to, and the answer might surprise you.

For commercial growers, profits come from selling crops.

For hobby growers, profits aren’t measured in dollars.

They’re measured in grams and pounds.

Or, as stated in the podcast:

Hobby profits are the ability to experiment.

Let me explain…

(or you can skip to the tl;dr at the end)

Let’s say, for ease:

  1. You grow 100 lbs.
  2. Each pound costs you $1 to grow.
  3. You can sell each pound for $2.
  4. You need to sell 50 pounds to cover costs.
  5. You have 50 pounds leftover of “profit.”

For a commercial grow, all 100 pounds get sold.

Profit = $$$

For a hobbyist, it looks more like this:

  1. You get 3 lbs from your harvest.
  2. You need 2 lbs to cover medicinal/personal needs.
